Benefits Of Orthodontic Treatment With Braces

At Horton Orthodontics, we know that straight smiles are more than just beautiful. A straight smile also functions well and means your teeth are properly aligned to create the optimal environment for chewing, speaking and breathing. It also reduces wear and tear for improved long-term oral health. Our goal with orthodontic treatment is to not only help you feel good about the appearance of your smile and teeth, but to also help you achieve excellent oral health that you will carry with you for the rest of your life!

How Do Metal Braces Work?

Metal braces are used to treat a wide variety of bite issues such as crowding, overbites, underbites, crossbites and extra spacing between teeth. Metal braces are placed on the front surface of each tooth and an archwire will be placed through each of the metal brackets. Bands are then placed on the back molars to provide an anchor for the archwire, and this creates a gentle force that slowly moves the teeth into their proper position. It is normal to experience some soreness a few days after a wire change. However, your teeth will adjust to the new forces within a few days.

What Are My Metal Braces Made Of?

There are several key components of metal braces that work together to give you a beautiful, straight smile including:

  • Bands, or metal rings, are cemented on the back upper and lower molars to secure the archwires.

  • Brackets are small, low-profile metal squares that are attached to the surface of each tooth. The brackets hold the archwires in place (with elastics) so that the teeth will undergo the proper forces during treatment.

  • Archwires are made of thin metal and are placed in the center of each bracket. They will provide the source of tension that will move the teeth during treatment.

  • The small, elastic rings or ties come in a variety of colors and are used to hold the archwire to each bracket. For children, the elastics are the fun part of having metal braces and can be changed out at each orthodontic visit.

Caring For Your Braces: What Not To Eat

One of the most important ways to care for your braces during orthodontic treatment is to avoid foods that are sticky or chewy and may pull the brackets or bands off of your teeth. While a loose or dislocated bracket is an easy fix, too many loose brackets can affect tooth movement and increase the treatment time. Opt for soft foods and limit foods like:

  • Gum

  • Hard chips, pretzels or bread

  • Nuts

  • Ice

  • Popcorn

  • Sticky, hard candy

Tips For Cleaning Your Metal Braces

Keeping your teeth and gums healthy during orthodontic treatment may actually reduce the time you will have to wear your braces. Dr. Horton suggests establishing a routine of brushing twice a day and flossing every day. Diligently cleaning the gums during orthodontic treatment will help reduce the inflammation that can naturally occur. Making a habit to brush after meals helps clear food particles that can become lodged above the brackets. This will reduce plaque build up that leads to decay and cavities. On the day you get your braces, our team will review the best way to brush and floss your teeth so that you can have healthy teeth and gums throughout your orthodontic treatment.
