Early orthodontic intervention ensures your child’s teeth and jaw develop properly. We recommend bringing your child in for their first appointment with us by the age of 7 or at the first sign of an orthodontic problem. Our early orthodontic treatment begins by assessing your child’s mouth, reviewing their dental history and talking with you through any concerns you may have. From there, Dr. Horton and our team will schedule regular monitoring appointments until your child is ready to start treatment or prescribe an interceptive treatment plan that is tailor-made for your child.

Surgical orthodontics combines the use of braces with surgical procedures performed by an oral maxillofacial surgeon in an effort to improve oral function, facial symmetry and reestablish balance to the size or position of the jaw. Surgical orthodontics is reserved for patients with complex malocclusion that impacts their ability to chew, swallow, breathe and speak. This type of corrective treatment aims to improve oral function, as the jaw is balanced and the teeth are aligned. Horton Orthodontics also specializes in the treatment of impacted canines to ensure that each patient has the best possible outcome and can avoid unnecessary extractions.

One of the most important parts of orthodontic treatment is the retention phase. We recommend that patients wear a retainer to maintain their new smile as soon as they have completed treatment. At Horton Orthodontics, we offer clear, removable Essix retainers or aligners to our patients to ensure that your teeth stay in alignment. For patients who began treatment with a space between their upper teeth, we may recommend a fixed retainer to keep the space from reopening. Additionally, patients have the option of easily replacing retainers in a cost-effective way with our Retainer RX program.

TAD expanders are advanced orthodontic devices designed to gently widen the upper or lower jaw, creating the space needed for proper tooth alignment. Supported by temporary anchorage devices (TADs)—small, stable anchors—these expanders allow for more precise and predictable jaw expansion. This approach helps reduce crowding, improve bite alignment, and promote healthy jaw development. Often recommended for older children and teens ages 12 to 17, TAD expanders provide a comfortable, non-surgical treatment option. Each appliance is fully customized to the patient, delivering effective results while supporting a balanced, confident smile.

Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (MARPE) is an advanced orthodontic treatment designed to gently widen the upper jaw and create the space needed for proper tooth alignment. Using a specialized expander supported by temporary anchorage devices (TADs), MARPE allows for precise, controlled expansion of the jaw. This approach is especially beneficial for older teens and adults whose jaw development is more mature. By improving bite alignment, relieving crowding, and enhancing overall facial balance, MARPE offers a comfortable, customized solution that supports long-term oral health and confidence.
