Getting Your Smile Back To Perfection

Have your teeth shifted? Maybe your smile isn’t what you remembered it looked like after your braces came off or you finished your last set of Invisalign® trays. You are not alone! According to the National Library of Medicine, around 50% of orthodontic patients see a setback within about 10 years of completing their treatment. At Horton Orthodontics, we are happy to assist our adult patients who have experienced orthodontic care previously and are looking to touch up their smile!

Why Do Teeth Move?

It is totally normal for your teeth to move! In fact, changes happen in the supportive structures of our teeth as we grow older. This can come in the form of a weakening jawbone or loosening of ligaments. Genetic factors can also influence the size and shape of the jawbones and teeth. For example, individuals with smaller jawbones or teeth may experience crowding, which can result in teeth shifting as they try to find space within the limited area. Other reasons for teeth shifting include:

Just like in life, as we age our body changes. The muscles, ligaments, tissues and fibers surrounding your jaw may get weaker, and as a result, teeth may become loose or shift positions. In particular, the front teeth tend to shift inward, making it more noticeable.

Teeth rely on neighboring teeth for support. When a tooth is lost, there’s now an empty space where that support is lacking. The adjacent teeth may start to shift or tilt into the space left by the missing tooth, seeking stability.

It often happens when you’re not realizing it or sleeping at night, but teeth grinding will take a toll on your smile. Chronic grinding can gradually shift the position of the teeth, causing misalignment or changes in bite alignment.

Our teeth have a tendency to want to move back to their original positions, which is why it is key that you wear a retainer to maintain your beautiful, new smile for a lifetime. Inconsistently wearing a retainer, or not wearing one at all, allows your teeth to move about freely.

Importance of Seeing An Orthodontist For Your Touch Up

Though you may be tempted by other options, it is important to see an orthodontist such as Dr. Horton for touch-ups after minor movements in teeth because even small changes in tooth alignment can affect your overall bite and dental health. Teeth are not just for aesthetics; they play a crucial role in how your bite functions. Even minor movements can cause misalignment issues, leading to problems such as difficulty chewing, jaw pain or uneven wear on teeth. Misaligned teeth can even make it harder to clean them properly, leading to an increased risk of gum disease, cavities and other dental issues. Touch-up treatments allow Dr. Horton to ensure that your teeth are in the optimal positions for maintaining good oral hygiene as well as a beautiful, straight smile.
