Our Exclusive Club For Kids!

Our club is specifically designed for our youngest patients who are not yet ready for orthodontic treatment. We will recommend regularly scheduled visits to monitor growth and overall development. We’ve found that making kids’ orthodontic visits fun helps them feel at ease and even excited for their appointments. We love seeing their creativity and excitement while we foster their great relationship with orthodontics and lifelong healthy smiles. Our club is designed to set kids up for success by helping them get started with treatment at the right time for their unique smiles and needs.

How Does The Horton Who’s Kids Club Work?

Each new member of Horton Orthodontics is inducted into the club at their very first visit with us. At each recall appointment, also known as an observation appointment, they will be rewarded points. These points will accumulate, and they can use them on different prizes. Kids can choose their prizes from the prize cabinet.

Fun Facts About Orthodontics

At Horton Orthodontics, we love teaching kids about orthodontics. We’ve found that learning about orthodontics can be helpful for your child before they visit us, too—it can help them feel more familiar with orthodontics, which can help them conquer any fears! Below are some fun and interesting facts about orthodontics for you and your family.

  • The word orthodontics means “straightening/correcting teeth.” It is of Greek origin, as orthos means “straight” and odon means “teeth.”
  • Did you know that most prehistoric and ancient humans actually had straight teeth?
  • Archeologists have found that ancient Romans, Egyptians, and Greeks all had some form of braces. Ancient Egyptians had braces made of both metal and parts of animals. Even Cleopatra herself wore braces!
  • A French dentist named Christophe-Francois Delabarre invented the first modern braces in the year 1819.
  • Edward Angle is known as the Father of Orthodontics. The classification system that he developed is still used today!
  • The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) was founded in the 1930’s.
  • While all orthodontists are dentists, not all dentists are orthodontists.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kids And Orthodontics

Have questions? We’re here to answer them for you. Below, we have answers to some of our frequently asked questions about orthodontic treatment for kids.

A lot of the time, orthodontic issues come from genetics. However, habits such as thumb-sucking, or poor nutrition, oral health or even accidents can also cause orthodontic issues in children.

Your child should lose most or all of their baby teeth by the time they are 12 or 13 years old.

Depending on the treatment plan or phase of treatment, we will recommend regularly scheduled visits for adjustments and/or progress checks at regularly scheduled intervals. These visits are important to keep your treatment timeline on track. We have worked hard to develop a schedule that will accommodate the needs of our patients and allow for the appropriate time and/or atmosphere needed to make each visit go smoothly. We reserve before and after school appointments for our shorter check and adjustment appointments to help minimize missed school or work. If you can’t make your regularly scheduled appointments, it is important that you let us know as soon as possible so that we can find an alternative for you that will help us keep your treatment time on track.

YES this is completely normal during the expansion phase and sometimes the size of the “gap” can be alarming—but it is truly nothing to worry about! This means that the expansion appliance is doing it’s work and soon we will move on to aligners or partial upper braces to help close up the space.

Over-the-counter pain medicine can help your child feel relief—just make sure to give them the proper dosage for their age and weight. We also recommend having your child gargle with warm salt water to help relieve any soreness. If a particular bracket or wire is bothering them, we can give them orthodontic wax to place over the area. Time will also help with the soreness as their mouth gets used to their metal braces.

During orthodontic treatment at Horton Orthodontics, it’s essential to eat soft foods like yogurt, pasta, and steamed vegetables while avoiding hard, sticky, or chewy items like nuts, popcorn, and caramel. Sugary foods and drinks should also be minimized to prevent plaque buildup. Cutting food into small pieces and chewing slowly can help protect your braces and ensure comfort. Following these guidelines will help maintain oral hygiene and support the success of your treatment.

Yes. After your child finishes their orthodontic treatment, their teeth can actually shift back to their original positions. This is why your child must wear their retainers after they finish each stage of treatment.
