Retainers

Protecting Your Smile After Orthodontic Treatment

You’ve completed treatment, and the hard work is over when it comes to achieving your dream smile! Now, in order to keep that beautiful smile around for a lifetime, you will enter what we call the retention phase. Believe it or not, your orthodontic journey is not over when your braces come off or when you finish your last set of aligners. Your teeth can shift after treatment, so it is important that you wear a retainer every night, or as prescribed by Dr. Horton, to ensure your new results last. Our team will design a personalized one for you after treatment to maintain your radiantly aligned smile!

Why Do I Need A Retainer?

Just like maintaining a well-balanced diet and exercise helps you achieve optimal health, wearing a retainer helps you keep your ideal smile. If you don’t wear one, your teeth will start to shift out of their proper alignment. You may wonder if you can give yourself a break after treatment and start wearing one later. If you decide to put off wearing a retainer or briefly stop wearing one, you are allowing your teeth to move freely, which can set back your treatment results. On a positive note, retainers are a breeze! We make getting your new hardware easy by finding the best one to fit your needs.

Types Of Retainers

Retainers come in different types, and Dr. Horton will explain your options and talk about the benefits with you. At Horton Orthodontics, we understand not every patient’s case is the same, so Dr. Horton makes sure your retainer is 100% customized to you.

  • Removable Retainer: We offer removable appliances called Clear Modified Retainers. Also called Essix retainers, they are transparent and custom-fitted. They are created from a durable, clear plastic to help keep your teeth from moving. Unlike traditional wire retainers, their clear design makes them aesthetically pleasing and less noticeable. These retainers are worn full-time initially, and you will gradually reduce wear to nighttime as directed by Dr. Horton. They can easily be taken out, but you do still need to wear them consistently. Clear Modified Retainers are a great way to ensure the long-term success of your orthodontic treatment.

  • Alternative Retainer For Certain Dental Needs: Dr. Horton may prescribe a semi-permanent bonded retainer for special dental circumstances, such as a maxillary frenum (space between the front teeth). This type of retainer is not prescribed for all patients, and Dr. Horton will determine which is most suitable for you.

Choosing Your Retainers

Dr. Horton will prescribe the retainer that she feels is the best solution for you. It is important to follow Dr. Horton’s instructions for routine wear and maintenance to ensure the longevity of your smile results. Here are some points you may want to consider when choosing one:

Clear Modified Retainers are removable, which means they can be easily taken out for brushing and flossing, allowing you to maintain better oral hygiene, reducing the risk of plaque buildup and dental issues such as cavities and gum disease. In comparison, some may find the permanent ones slightly challenging to clean since they cannot be removed, which is why Dr. Horton does not usually recommend them.

Removable retainers are custom-made to fit your mouth comfortably. They are often made of gentle materials that minimize irritation to the tongue, cheeks and gums. Semi-permanent bonded retainers are designed to be thin and smooth, minimizing any discomfort or irritation to your tongue or cheeks. Once they are in place, most people adapt to them quickly and do not even notice them.

Clear Modified Retainers are more cost-effective than other options, making them easy to replace!

Our Retainer RX Program: Savings For You & Your Smile

Our Retainer RX Program will provide up to 3 sets of retainers for 5 years post-active treatment. For our multi-phase treatment patients, the program will replace lost or broken retainers between Phase I & II, plus an additional 5 years after Phase II. Don’t let the fear of costly replacement retainers keep you from replacing lost or broken retainers.

Our Retainer RX Program allows you to have up to 3 sets of retainers made per year at no additional cost. A copay will be charged if we need a new scan/models or to ship retainers. A set of retainers would typically cost $500 or more per set. At the implementation of the program we will obtain a FREE 3D scan of your teeth once your braces are removed to make models from which all future retainers will be made. These models will be kept in your possession for you to drop off when you require additional retainers. This reduces office visits, scanned impressions and allow us to make retainers for you without charging an additional co-pay. The Retainer RX Program fees are non-refundable or transferable. Typical turnaround time for delivery of your appliances is 3-5 business days; however this depends practice and patient availability. Your enrollment in the program will provide you with 2 sets of retainers upon the removal of your braces so that you have your first back-up set of retainers ready to use should you need to replace them.

Because we feel that it is our ethical obligation to help you keep the smile that you worked to achieve, we offer a discount to patients who opt into the Program at the beginning of treatment. If you miss this opportunity—no worries! The Retainer RX Program is ALWAYS available to you whether we provided your orthodontic care or not. If you’ve had braces or aligners in the past and want to enroll in the Retainer Replacement Program, please contact our office to schedule your FREE 3D scan today!
